There are paper, plastic, liquid, cloth, and other types of painter’s tape. The most commonly used one is paper masking tape, which has a low cost and a good effect.
Masking tape and painter tape are a product. Because masking tape is mostly used for spray painting and modeling, it is also called painter tape.
- Before using masking tape, clean the sticking surface to ensure that there are no gray water stains on it, which will affect the sticking effect.
- After tearing off the release film, stick the masking tape from one end. If you want to stick a straight line, it is best to use laser assistance. If it is an irregular shape, stick it and then use a blade to cut out the specific shape.
When the paint is completely dry, you can remove the painter’s tape. Tear it off slowly to avoid scratching the paint surface with the tape pulled on the side.
Masking tape may damage wall paint, especially when the paint surface is not fully dried, or the tape remains applied for too long. Ensuring the paint is completely dry and cured, and removing the tape promptly, is key to preventing damage.
Masking tape is not recyclable. After removal, paint residue remains on the tape surface, making it unsuitable for reuse even if it still has adhesive properties. Additionally, the back of the tape easily collects dust from walls, and its uneven surface can severely affect subsequent spray painting results.
Paper masking tape typically needs to be removed within 24 hours after the paint has dried to the touch. Some tapes offer a longer removal window; for example, special types of masking tape can remain in place for 14 to 60 days before removal.
Ordinary masking tape is typically not acid-free. You can purchase acid-free masking tape specifically designed for sensitive applications. Be sure to check for the “acid-free” label on the packaging.
Masking tape is non-conductive in dry conditions but not fully insulating; it can become hazardous and risk electric shock when damp after painting, and should not be used as a substitute for electrical tape.
Washi masking tape is biodegradable, while other materials, such as acrylic, PVC, PET, and fabric-based masking tapes, are not biodegradable.
