The core principle of butyl tape lies in utilizing the low permeability, permanent viscoelasticity, and high cohesion of butyl rubber to achieve long-term sealing through physical adhesion and compression deformation.
Butyl tape is a sealing material with permanent adhesion that maintains its adhesive strength without requiring curing. In contrast, putty tape is made from recombination rubber material, with both cost and service life lower than butyl tape, making it more suitable for short-term or temporary repair needs, while butyl tape is better suited for applications requiring long-term or permanent sealing.
Butyl tape will indeed gradually harden when exposed to outdoor environments over the long term, but this is typically a slow aging process. As the years of use increase, UV radiation and prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures will accelerate the aging rate of butyl tape. Products like Tanyo’s butyl tape, through the addition of UV inhibitors and antioxidants, effectively enhance weather resistance, with a service life of up to 20 years.
Specifically, when applied in dry and stable environments, the high-quality Tanyo butyl tape can achieve a service life approaching or reaching 20 years. Conversely, prolonged exposure to harsh conditions such as extreme temperatures, humidity, chemical corrosion, or mechanical stress may lead to accelerated aging and a reduced lifespan.
Before using butyl tape, the bonding surface must be cleaned and kept dry.
Then, measure the required length of the butyl tape, peel off the release film, and apply it.
After application, press evenly to ensure the tape adheres uniformly and no bubbles are formed.
For removing small areas of butyl tape, a scraper or blade can be used to scrape it off gently. However, care should be taken to avoid using this method on surfaces prone to scratching. For larger areas of butyl rubber, it is recommended to use heating before removal or employ solvents and other auxiliary means for cleaning.
For lapping color steel tiles on metal roofs, double-sided butyl tape can be used to achieve both waterproofing and insulation effects. For small-area damage repair or waterproofing treatment of areas such as chimneys and skylights, aluminum foil butyl flashing tape can be used.
The surface of double-sided butyl tape can be temporarily written on with a marker pen, but butyl tape is not suitable for painting. Aluminum foil and non-woven butyl tape can be used for doodling.
