High temperature removal

For aged butyl rubber residues, the hot air heating method can be employed:

  1. Use a heat gun or household hair dryer (set to medium-low heat) and move it steadily at a distance of 3-6 inches (approximately 8-15 cm) from the adhesive surface for heating.
  2. Once the adhesive softens to a semi-fluid, viscous state (where it forms strings when lightly touched with a finger), immediately scrape it off using a plastic scraper, moving steadily in a single direction.
  3. Note: During heating, continuously move the heat source to avoid localized overheating, and stop heating when the adhesive’s viscosity decreases but before it fully liquefies; excessive heating can cause the adhesive to seep into gaps and solidify, creating secondary residues that are more difficult to remove.

Low-temperature removal

When dealing with highly viscous butyl rubber residue, the freeze-embrittlement method can be utilized:

  1. Continuously freeze the adhesive using dry ice, ice cubes, or specialized freezing spray (5-10 cm from the adhesive surface) until its temperature drops below the embrittlement point (typically ≤-40℃), causing the adhesive to harden into a brittle plastic-like state;
  2. Then, use a rigid scraper (PTFE material is recommended) to cut along the edge and pry upward at an angle of ≤30° to remove the entire frozen adhesive block.

Key controls: Freezing must cover the entire adhesive surface (approximately 5-10 minutes), and the operation should be completed while the adhesive is fully embrittled but before it warms up; excessive freezing may cause substrate shrinkage or cracking—use this method with caution on wood or porous materials.
