How To Install Door Weather Stripping?

For real estate developers and door and window manufacturers, selecting appropriate sealing strips and installing them correctly is crucial. High-quality sealing strips can block noise, enhance the thermal insulation performance of doors and windows, and ensure indoor comfort. This article will systematically analyze the entire process of door sealing strip installation to help you master the key technical points.

Prepare Installation tools

  1. Measuring tool: tape measure.
  2. Cleaning supplies: towel, neutral cleaner.
  3. Cutting tool: sharp scissors or utility knife.
  4. Auxiliary tools (optional): pencil, roller

Choose a suitable material

Choose Suitable material

  1. Door Frame Weatherstrip
  • Foam Material

Advantages: Lightweight, economical, self-adhesive design for easy installation.

Disadvantages: Insufficient resilience, short lifespan, prone to aging, and deformation.

  • Rubber Material (Silicone/EPDM)

Advantages: Excellent softness and resilience, strong weather resistance (UV-resistant, temperature-tolerant), lifespan exceeding 10 years.

Available in various shapes, such as D-type (round seal), E-type (hollow cushion), and I-type (flat fit).

       2. Door Bottom Seal strip

  1. Foam sealing strip

Advantages: Low cost, lightweight.

Disadvantages: Prone to wear, short lifespan.

Applications: Indoor light-duty doors with minimal bottom gaps (<5mm).

    • PVC/Vinyl plastic

Advantages: Excellent waterproofing, flexible, and resistant to deformation. Typically designed in an I-shape.

Disadvantages: Prone to brittleness at low temperatures.

Applications: Door bottoms in humid areas like bathrooms or kitchens that require moderate wear resistance.

Silicone rubber

Advantages: Superior resilience, weather and wear resistance, long lifespan. Common designs include U-shape (clamping type) and I-shape (drooping to contact the ground).

Applications: Perfectly adaptable to a variety of scenarios.

Aluminum alloy brush seal

Advantages: Sturdy structure, replaceable brush (economical and durable), high-end appearance. The upper part is an aluminum alloy, and the lower part is a nylon brush; shapes include H-type, T-type, F-type, and U-type.

Disadvantages: Higher price.

Applications: Commercial buildings or high-end residences, suitable for various doors: revolving doors, garage doors, and interior doors.

Measuring door gap data

After closing the door, measure the gap width between the door panel and the door frame. A coin-assisted method can be used: insert a coin into the gap, then measure the coin’s thickness, which approximates the gap width. Based on this measurement, select the appropriate seal strip size.

For the weatherstrip at the bottom of the door, its height selection should be based on the measured gap between the door bottom and the ground. Choose a specification that is 3-5mm higher than the actual gap. This ensures better sealing effectiveness.

Clean the door frame

After preparing the sealing strip, use a towel dipped in cleaning agent to wipe the door frame, threshold, or door edge, ensuring no oil or dust; damp areas can be dried with a hair dryer.

Measurement and cutting

  1. Measure the door frame: Use a tape measure to measure the lengths of the top and both sides (left and right) of the door frame separately.
  2. Cut the sealing strip: Trim the sealing strip to the corresponding length based on the measurement results. It is recommended to leave a 2–3cm installation allowance when cutting to prevent it from being unusable due to being too short.
  3. Choose the door bottom sealing strip: Select an appropriate length for the door bottom sealing strip based on the width of the door leaf.

Anti-theft door with threshold:

  1. Peel off the backing paper from the Self-adhesive weatherstrip tape. Align the tape centrally with the top edge of the door frame or the bottom threshold edge. Starting from one end, slowly press and adhere the tape around the door frame edge, ensuring it is smooth, snug, and free from twists or wrinkles.
  2. Joint Handling: For the four joints, use either an overlapping method or a splicing method, cutting them at a 45-degree angle. Then align the two angled cuts closely and splice them together at the corner.
  3. Throughout the entire pasting process and after completion, use your palm or a small roller to press firmly and repeatedly along the adhered tape. Ensure the tape makes complete and tight contact with the door frame surface, without any air bubbles or gaps, to achieve optimal sealing and fixing effects.

Bedroom door bottom sealing strip:

Since bedroom wooden doors usually lack a threshold, there is a significant gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, making it necessary to choose sealing strips specifically designed for the door bottom.

The installation methods are as follows:

  1. Attaching Sealing Strips:
  • U-Shaped Self-Adhesive: Remove the backing paper from the adhesive, align the sealing strip with the bottom edge of the door panel, and press firmly on both clamping sides to secure it in place.
  • Shaped Weather-Resistant Strip: Remove the backing paper from the adhesive, determine the installation position, and then smoothly attach the sealing strip to the inner edge of the door panel bottom.
  • Brush-Type Sealing Strip: Remove the backing paper from the adhesive to attach and secure it, or use screws to fix the base to the bottom of the door panel.
  1. Compacting:

After attachment, use your hands or a tool to press firmly along the attached/installed area to ensure the sealing strip is securely adhered to the door panel.
